Irish, Wolverines To Square Off Outdoors

After a bit of a rocky start, the Cale Morris of 2017-18 seems to be back.  Morris helped the now sixth-ranked Irish earn a weekend split with seventh-ranked Ohio State. He posted a 1.01 goals against average and an impressive .968 save percentage in the weekend series, and his 38 saves on 39 attempts was key to the game two victory.

His stellar showing garnered the junior netmider the Big Ten's Third Star of the Week award, his first such accolades this season.

Last year, Morris was superhuman between the pipes for the Irish.  He was named the Big Ten's Player and Goaltender of the Year and earned First Team All-American honors.  He was named the Big Ten's First (5), Second (2) or Third (1) Star of the Week a whopping eight times.

Morris started the 2018-19 campaign with very pedestrian stats, but has gradually rounded back into form with each successive outing.  His .924 save percentage and 2.28 goals against average aren't quite where he was last year, but that pace is all but impossible to replicate.  We're seeing more of what we expected from him going into the season now, and he likely will continue to improve incrementally.

The Irish continue Big Ten play on the road this weekend with a two-game set at Michigan on Nov. 9-10.  Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET.  The Irish won three of the five meetings last season, with the season tiebreaker coming in the 2018 NCAA Frozen Four Semifinal game.   Jake Evans notched the game-winner with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation to send Notre Dame to the final against Minnesota-Duluth.

LET'S TAKE THIS OUTSIDE

An added benefit of hosting the NHL Winter Classic is that the locals usually get a chance to skate on the outdoor ice as well.  This one will be extra-special, as Notre Dame and Michigan will meet at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, January 5, 2019 in Notre Dame Stadium.

The rivals will meet four days following the 2019 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® featuring the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins, on January 1, 2019.

NBC Sports Network is scheduled to televise the game in the House That Rockne Built, and look to make it a sweep of the Wolverines in Notre Dame Stadium.  Just four months ago, Notre Dame and Michigan met in a football game that saw the Irish post a 24-17 victory.

Tickets for the game versus Michigan went on sale on Monday, Nov. 5.  Visit und.com/buytickets or call 833-ND-IRISH and keep up to date with all ticketing information by following us on Twitter @NDtix.
