Pro signings highlight banner week for Irish

The 2017-18 season may have ended with a heartbreaking loss to Minnesota-Duluth in the NCAA Frozen Four title game, but the Irish continue to reap the rewards of one of the most successful campaigns in program history.  Four of their finest inked professional contracts this week and embarked on the next stage of their careers.

Jake Evans Signs With Montreal

Way back in 2014 - even before he stepped on the ice for the Irish for the first time - the Montreal Canadiens knew Jake Evans had potential.  Over the past four years, we've come to see what Habs have known all along.  The two sides culminated their long engagement Monday, as Evans signed a two-year contract with the Canadiens.

Evans has been rehabing a groin injury and is expected to continue to do.  Instead of reporting to Montreal's AHL affiliate Laval right away, Evans will begin his first professional stint in the 2018-19 season.

The Captain missed only one game in Irish career and fiinshed with a streak of 131 consecutive appearances.  His 138 points rank 21st in club history, while his 97 assists place him tied for 13th.  Since the beginning of his sophomore season, Evans has accumulated 121 points (34-87-121) in 117 games.

A First Team All-Big Ten selection, Evans was also named the 2018 Senior CLASS award winner for men’s ice hockey. The Senior CLASS award is given annually to a senior student-athlete who excels both on and off the ice, and has notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

While Evans has numerous highlights to his career, he will most likely be remembered for his dramatic game winner over Michigan in the Frozen Four semifinal, scoring with just 5.7 seconds left in regulation to send the Irish to the title game.

Oglevie Picks Sabres

An undrafted free agent, Andrew Oglevie opted to skip his senior season and signed a two-year entry level deal with the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.

A two-time leading scorer for the Irish, Oglevie surely had his choice of teams with which to continue his hockey career.  The alternate captain ranked second in points this season, collecting 15 goals and 24 assists, and added NCAA All-Tournament honors by leading all skaters with seven points in four games.

The 5'10, 180 lb. junior from Fullerton, California wraps up his collegiate career with 41 goals and 48 assists in 107 regular-season games.

Coyotes Add Jordan Gross

Apparently 159 consecutive games wasn't enough hockey for Jordan Gross.  Before the ink was even dry on his entry-level contract with Phoenix, Gross flew to Tucson on Thursday to join the  Coyotes' AHL affiliate for the remainder of their season.  While the streak ended Friday - Gross skated in warm-ups but didn't play - his professional career has only just begun.

The Hobey Baker Award nominee finished his career with 121 points (36 goals, 85 assists), good for third all-time on the scoring list for Irish defensemen.  Gross also racked up the post-season accolades this season, being named to the 2017 Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team (Manchester), the 2018 East Regional All-Tournament Team (Bridgeport) and to the 2018 Frozen Four All-Tournament Team (Saint Paul).  He also earned the 2018 NCAA East Regional Most Outstanding Player award, in part by scoring a pair of goals, including the overtime game winner, in Notre Dame’s first round victory over Michigan Tech.

Gilbert Signs With Blackhawks

Dennis Gilbert proved that not only can you go home again, sometimes you don't ever have to leave.  The junior defenseman wrapped up a week of pro signings for the Irish by signing a three-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.  Gilbert will join the AHL affiliate Rockford Icehogs for the remainder of the season.

Gilbert was drafted by the Blackhawks in the third round (91st overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. The 21-year-old recently completed his junior season at the University of Notre Dame where he scored 10 points (4G, 6A) in 39 games.  During his three seasons, Gilbert was a key member on Notre Dame’s blue line and helped the Irish to back-to-back Frozen Four appearances - including the program’s second NCAA title game appearance to close out his career.

Prior to playing at Notre Dame, Gilbert played the 2014-15 season with the Chicago Steel of the USHL where he tallied 27 points (4G, 23A) in 59 games and was named to the USHL All-Rookie Team.
