Sophomore netminder 1 of 5 finalists for Goaltender of the Year Award

March 22, 2018

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- University of Notre Dame sophomore goaltender Cale Morris, the NCAA leader in save percentage, wins and saves, has been named one of five finalists for the Mike Richter Award.

The Mike Richter award is given annually to the top goaltender in college hockey. In addition to Morris, the four other finalists include Matthew Galajda (Cornell), Tanner Jaillet (Denver), Colton Point (Colgate) and Cayden Primeau (Northeastern).

Morris, who is also a Top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, and the Fighting Irish are the No. 1 seed at this weekend's NCAA East Regional in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They take on Michigan Tech in regional semifinals on Friday, March 23, at 3 p.m. ET (ESPN2).

After playing one period (19:43) in Notre Dame’s first game of the 2016-17 season in mop up duty for starter Cal Petersen in an eventual 9-2 win over Arizona State (Oct. 7), Morris has burst onto the scene with an impressive sophomore season for the Irish. He boasts a .946 save percentage to lead the country, while his 24 victories and 1,089 saves are also the top totals in the country. He has recorded four shutouts on the season.

Last weekend, Morris was named the Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player as he helped lead the Irish to wins over Penn State and Ohio State as Notre Dame followed up winning the B1G regular season title by claiming the conference tournament championship. That came after being named both Player of the Year and Goaltender of the Year by the Big Ten.

Morris becomes just the second Irish goaltender to be named a finalist, following Petersen’s finalist status a year ago. Morris has already been named a Hobey Baker Top 10 Finalist, becoming the fourth player in program history to receive such accolades.

Currently, Morris’ save percentage for the 2017-18 season would set the Notre Dame record, while his goals against average would rank third all-time and his total saves would rank fourth in the single-season record book. His 24 victories are tied for second-most in school history, trailing only 30-win seasons by David Brown (2006-07) and Jordan Pearce (2008-09).

The 2018 Mike Richter Award will be presented on Friday, April 6, during NCAA Frozen Four Weekend in St. Paul, Minnesota.
