December 8-10

NCAA D1 Men

Notre Dame 3, Wisconsin 2
Notre Dame 6, Wisconsin 2

It would have been quite fitting if the Irish had worn their green sweaters this week as they played the role of the Grinch to perfection, stealing  Christmas and a couple wins from the Badgers.  Trailing by two in the thrid period, Notre Dame found a little holiday magic in Dylan Malmquist's stick to eek out a comeback and keep the winning streak alive.  After Malmquist got the Irish on the board, Dawson Cook knotted things up with a tad over five minutes left to play.  About a minute and a half later, Malmquist tallied his second of the night while Cale Morris withstood nearly two minutes against the extra attacker to wrap up the win.

Saturday saw the Irish stuff the Badgers' stocking with coal and their net with rubber, as Cal Burke recorded the team's first hat trick in over two years to pace the victory.  Dennis Gilbert added a pair of goals, and Morris stopped 39 of 41 shots to help Notre Dame stretch the win streak to thirteen.

After focusing on finals for the next few days and a well-deserved rest, Notre Dame kicks off the second half with a home & home against the Michigan Wolverines.

NAIA

Indiana Tech 5, Iowa State 2
Indiana Tech 7, Iowa State 3

The Warriors took a break from NAIA play this weekend but not from winning, taking a couple souvenirs from their pre-break trip to Iowa State.  The Cyclones came into the series ranked #12 in ACHA Division 1, but Tech was bound and determined to have a happy holidays.  Stavros Soilis struck twice in the opening frame and  Ryan Attwood added another to open a 3-0 lead.  Iowa State would tally once in the second and once in the third to trim the lead to one, but  Mike Tish and Jarrett Pfeiffer restored the advantage and Zach Larson stopped the rest of his 34 saves to preserve the victory.

Game two was a back and forth affair early, with Brian Skillicorn  and Alexander Gregorich giving Tech a two-goal edge only to see the Cyclones bounce right back.  Jace Childs scored the first of his three goals to give the Warriors a 3-2 lead after one, but Iowa State would answer once more.  Tiring of the see-saw pace, Zach Bennett and Attwood pitched in a couple scores and Childs finished off his hat trick to run away with this one.  John Slavik would tally 37 saves en route to his eighth win of the season.

Indiana Tech resumes play the first weekend of January against the Midland Warriors, who will be joining NAIA Hockey in 2018.

NCAA D3 Women

Trine 1, Aurora 4
Trine 5, Davenport 1 (Exhibition)

Things started off well for the Thunder in the final game of the first half, taking a 1-0 lead off Eryn Isaacson's goal at 8:19 of the opening frame.  Unfortunately that proved to be the only score of the game for Trine, while the Spartans would find the back of the net four times to hand the Thunder their seventh-straight defeat.  Molly Scarborough continues to put forth a solid effort in net, stopping  29 of 33 shots on the night.

The Thunder were able kick off the holiday season with a little celebration though, as they topped Davenport 5-1 in an exhibition match on Saturday.  Sierra Westner and Sydney Hernalsteen gave Trine a 2-1 lead at the first intermission, and Issacson scored twice in the second to push the advantage to 4-1.   Sula Argyris would wrap up the scoring with her tally in the closing frame.  Ryan Harth would earn the victory with 19 saves.

Trine starts the second half of the season at home with a pair against the Chatham Cougars on Jan. 5 & 6.

ACHA D3

Trine 9, Ball State 2
Trine 10, Ball State 3

The Thunder improved their record to 4-1 against ICHC teams, dishing out a pair of solid beating to the slumping Cardinals.  Trine opened up a 7-0 lead, as Adam Bedford netted three of his four goals, Jacob Ruelle added a pair, and Jalan Armstrong and Jacob Yehle all scored before Ball State would get on the board with Nick Ramsey's unassisted tally at 16:55 of the second period.  Bedford would close out the middle frame with his fourth goal, while the Cardinals' Jarred Van Hauter and Trine's Cameron Bopp traded goals in the third to account for the final margin.  The Thunder would double up the Cardinals in shots on goal, finishing with a 60-30 advantage.  Colin Kaminsky earned the win for the Thunder, while Macklan Hayes stopped 51 shots in the losing effort.

Saturday's rematch would go much the same way, as Trine would score four times in the first period on their way to a 10-3 victory.  The two teams would each score three in the middle frame to keep the game interesting, but the Thunder would tally three more in the third to put the game out of reach.  Van Hauter (2 goals) and Ramsey (1g, 2a) were the bright spots for the Cardinals, while Zach Betz would stop 53 of 63 to take the loss in net.  Ryan Dumond tallied once in each period, finishing off his hat trick with seven minutes left in the game.  Trenton Mulnix (1g, 3a) would equal Dumond's four points on the night, while Yehle, Bedford, Olli Jansson, and Michael Wiggins would each pitch in three.  Justin Savage played the first two periods to earn the win, and Daniel Klaybor stopped all 15 shots he faced in relief.

Both teams have over a month off, as the Thunder play host to Finlandia on Jan 19 & 20, while Ball State travels to Lexington to take on ICHC foe Eastern Kentucky on Jan 12 & 13.
