September 29 - October 1, 2017

Just as the temperatures can swing from hot to cold and back again, so too can a hockey teams' fortunes.  Some teams took to the ice for the first time (ever, in one case).  Some streaks fell like the early autumn leaves, while others continued to hang on despite the overwhelming pull of the inevitable.

Several teams were idle this weekend as programs are working through scheduling, transportation, ice time, etc., but as we flip the calendar to October, we expect to see the game slate start filling up.  Patience is not only a virtue, but a necessity when it comes to early season hockey.

As reliable as the turning of the seasons, here's your weekly College Hockey Roundup...

Fans hope this becomes an all-to-familiar sight from Cam Morrison and the Irish offense

Notre Dame 4, USNDT 3

The Fighting Irish geared up for the 2017-18 season with an exhibition match against the USNDT, and it was only fitting that former Development Team goaltender Dylan St. Cyr would pick up the win.  Captain Jake Evans would notch a couple of assists, and Cam Morrison would score a goal and an assist to pace the Irish.  Sophomore Cale Morris would start the game in net and play the first half before giving way to St. Cyr.

The Irish will open the regular season this coming weekend with a home series against Alabama Huntsville (Oct. 6-7).

Midland may have gotten the upper hand in this scrum, but Tech would come out on top when it mattered most

Indiana Tech 6, Midland 3
Indiana Tech 6, Midland 5 (OT)

The Indiana Tech Warriors kicked off both Homecoming Weekend and their 2017-18 season with a win over the 18th-ranked Midland Warriors.  Zach Larson stopped 31 of 34 shots in the victory, and newcomer Stavros Stoilis would lend a hand in three of Tech's goals.   Tech would never trail in the opener, but Saturday's rematch would prove to be a bigger challenge.  The Warriors would overcome deficits on three separate occasions, including the game tying goal with 1:09 left, in a skirmish-marred contest.  Jace Childs would prove the hero, netting both the game-tying and game-winning goals.

Indiana Tech returns to action on October 13 as they open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play at Rochester.

Joe Laskero made sure the Thunder didn't trail for long after Ferris State took an early lead Saturday

Joe Laskero made sure the Thunder didn't trail for long after Ferris State took an early lead Saturday

Trine 13, Ferris State 2
Trine 9, Ferris State 1

The shutout streak ended early in Friday's contest with Ferris State, but not the win streak as the Thunder rolled to a pair of wins over the visiting Bulldogs.  Nick Anderson would pace the Thunder in the opener, and Luka Znidarsic found the twine three times.  Tyler Hough would get the start in net and the win.

Saturday's tilt proved to be the first time all season an opponent would hold the Thunder to single digits.  The Bulldogs would strike first in this one, and Trine would trail 1-0 for the first time in history.  The deficit would be short lived, though, as Joe Laskero would pull the Thunder even in the first.   Brandon Bornkamp and Michael Rand's would each score a pair to help Trine coast to another victory.

The Thunder kick off a home & home on October 6th as they travel to Cleveland State University before returning home for the rematch.

The tenacity and grit the Greyhounds showed Friday should help them break into the win column soon enough

UIndy 2, Bradley 3

The Greyhounds finally took to the ice after a building process over a year in the making.  The UIndy squad seemed to suffer from too much adrenaline in the early going and fell behind 3-0 to a Bradley team that has seen little success this season against teams from the Hoosier state.  The Greyhounds would come out after the first break a more relaxed and composed bunch, gradually tilting the ice in their favor.  Tyler Gregory would score the first two goals in club history to close the gap to one, but the deficit would prove to be too large to overcome.

Unfortunately, a time change and an officiating issue would keep the two teams from squaring off again on Saturday, meaning the Greyhounds would be forced to wait until October 13th before getting another shot to earn the club's historic first win.

UIndy is idle next weekend, and will travel to Buffalo to take on Alpena Community College at the Harbor Center on Oct. 13/14.

Purdue became the first to take down a Trine team, but the Thunder would bounce back in the rematch

Purdue 4, Trine 2
Trine 4, Purdue 1

The Thunder D3 team would become the first in program history to taste defeat, falling to Purdue in first game of a home & home.  The surprising Boilermakers would strike first on a goal by James Panullo, but Trine would score the next two to take the lead.  The rest would be all Boilermakers as Will Anderson would tally a goal and two assists to pace the win.

Saturday's rematch would see Trine control the tempo from the opening whistle.  Jacob Yehle would score the first goal three minutes into the game, and Ryan Dumond would tack on another to put the Thunder up 2-0 after the 1st.  Forwards Jacob Ruelle and Trenton Mulnix would both score in the third period to stretch the lead to four.  Dominick Cappadonna would get the Boilermakers on the board, but the final margin would remain at three.

The Boilermakers host Hope College next weekend at the Fuel Tank.  UM-Flint pays a visit to the Thunder Ice Arena to take on Trine.

Ryan Krolikowski led the D3 Warriors to a pair of wins to start the season

SVSU 4, Indiana Tech 7
Indiana Tech 5, SVSU 1

Indiana Tech's D3 took both ends of a home & home to complete the weekend sweep for the Warriors.  Ryan Krolikowski and Jerret Haas would pace the Tech scoring, and Chris Boyd would pick up the win in game 1.  Tyler Lantzsch's two first-period tallies would put the Warriors on top in Saturday's matchup.  Boyd would give one back early in the 2nd, but would allow nothing further.  Krolikowski would tack on a goal and an assist to push the final margin.

The Warriors are idle next weekend but will open MCHC play with a home & home against Davenport on October 13/14.  Tech will host the opener on Friday 10/13.

The Hoosiers had much to celebrate this weekend taking a pair from Notre Dame and EKU.

Notre Dame 1, Indiana 6
Indiana 13, E. Kentucky 1

The Hoosiers opened their season with a trip to South Bend to take on the Fighting Irish.  Jack Meredith would kick things off, scoring goals in the first and third periods, while Joey Bolger would tack on a goal and two assists.

IU would launch the ICHC season on Sunday, hosting Eastern Kentucky for their first conference game.  Hospitality would not be their strong suit, as the Hoosiers would sprint to a 6-0 first period lead en route to a 13-1 humiliation of the visiting Colonels.

The Hoosiers travel to Grand Rapids next weekend to take on Calvin College
