September 22-24, 2017

Week 2 of the collegiate season saw some teams continue their skyrocket start, while others came crashing back to Earth. The Trine Thunder are on a whole other planet, as the ACHA D2 and D3 teams christened the Thunder Ice Arena by outscoring their guests by a combined 54-2! The Hoosiers dropped the two-game road set to Cincinnati.  The Irish suffered a stroke of bad luck in northern Illinois, while Ball State was gifted a win just a couple hours south.

Here's the rundown of all the weekend's action:

ACHA D2

Trine 14, Akron 0
Trine 18, Akron 0

The Thunder picked up where they left off last week by obliterating the Akron Zips by a combined 32-0. The complete rundown of Trine’s amazing start can be found in our feature article Power Surge posted Monday.
Trine opens their home schedule on Friday (9/22) against the Akron Zips at the Thunder Ice Arena.  Puck drops at 7pm.

Despite a solid effort, the Hoosiers would stumble on the road in Cincinnati

Indiana 2, Cincinnati 6
Indiana 4, Cincinnati 7

IU looked to bounce back after dropping their first road game at Louisville last weekend. The road had other ideas. Friday’s game saw the Bearcats draw first blood, but Nikolas Kropp would take the feed from Anthony Magro to draw the Hoosiers even near the twelve minute mark. Cincinnati would retake the lead at 14:15 and never look back. Indiana would continue to attack, but aside from a late goal by Chase Campbell this one would be all Bearcats.

Saturday would start eerily similar to the previous night’s tilt. Armand Uomoleale’s tally would help keep the Hoosiers close, but Cincinnati would take a 2-1 lead to the locker room at the first intermission. The Bearcats would score the next four before John Cristiano would ignite the Hoosiers’ offense with his unassisted goal eight minutes into the third. Colan Fitzgerald and Kropp would cut the deficit to two, but Cincinnati would add a late goal to snuff the rally.
The Hoosiers continue their road trip with a visit to the Aurora Spartans (Illinois) on Friday/Saturday.

ACHA D3

The Irish found little to celebrate in their series at Aurora

Notre Dame 4, Aurora 6
Notre Dame 5, Aurora 6

The Fighting Irish headed north of the (Illinois) border to square off against the Aurora Spartans. Despite outshooting their hosts in both games, Notre Dame was swept in the two game series. The luck of the Irish proved only to be bad luck, as controversy marred both contests.

Friday would see the Irish battle back from a first period 2-0 deficit with goals by Chandler Kotsees and Alec Asensio, only to fall behind again early in the second period. Awarded a penalty shot on a questionable call made the deficit 5-2, and despite tallies from Peter Mark and Greenberg could not close the gap.

The Irish would take the early lead in Saturday’s rematch, only to surrender the lead in the middle frame. Notre Dame would chip away to tie the game at five, only to fall behind once again. A last-second goal that would have sent the game to OT was waived off, and the Irish would make the short drive home with a very bad taste in their mouths.
Notre Dame return home to host the Indiana Hoosiers on Friday.

The Cardinals skated away with a pair of wins in Peoria this weekend

Ball State 0, Bradley 0 (Forfeit)
Ball State 5, Bradley 2

Bradley University would face their second consecutive opponent from the Hoosier state, this time hosting the Ball State Cardinals. Once again, the Braves would find Indiana teams to their disliking, as the guests would board the bus taking a pair of wins with them.

Friday’s game would officially be recorded as a 0-0 forfeit as the officials would fail to show for the game. As far as the Braves were concerned, it was for the best as Riley Miller would pace the Cardinals to an 8-2 victory. The visitors would have no problem in game two either, racking up a big lead on tallies from Ramsey, Bird, and Miller, and coasting away with a 5-2 win.
Ball State is idle this weekend. Next up is a two-game set with ICHC rival Butler Bulldogs on Oct. 6-7

EKU looked sharp against Lipscomb... the unis looked good as well.

E. Kentucky 8, Lipscomb 5
E. Kentucky 13, Lipscomb 1

Music City would serve as the backdrop for the first game against the Lipscomb Bison, and it was only fitting as the Colonels would strum the strings early and often. Ryan Gustafson would notch a first period hatty to help EKU open a 6-2 lead. Goals from Cristian Purdom, Gabe Bahn, and Timothy Muhsman would keep the Bison at bay.

Midnight Madness was the theme for game two in Lexington, and it would prove to be a nightmare for Lipscomb. The Colonels would go up by a touchdown in the first, and go on to slaughter the Bison 13-1.
Eastern Kentucky will play their first ICHC league games on October 1 as they travel to Bloomington to take on the Hoosiers.

Vanderbilt commanded the 'Dawgs full attention in Nashville

Butler 0, Vanderbilt 5

The Bulldogs would open their season in Music City as well, taking on the Vanderbilt Commodores in the ACHA D3 Game of the Week. Butler would have six newcomers in the lineup, including freshman netminder Ryan Dyball, who would make 25 saves in his first career start. This one would be all Vandy, though, as the Commodores refused to ‘let the Dawgs out’ until they had collared them with a 5-0 defeat.
Butler plays the visitor in their conference matchup with Ball State. Friday’s game will be played at the Fuel Tank, while the rematch will go down at Pop Weaver.

Trine 22, W. Michigan 2

In the nightcap at the Thunder Ice Arena’s christening, Howard Rose would be a thorn in the side of the visiting Western Michigan Broncos. Rose would net five of his own and add three helpers to pace the Thunder in a 22-2 shocker. Read more about Trine Hockey’s electrifying start in our feature article Power Surge.
The Thunder will face the Purdue Boilermakers in a home & home series this weekend. Friday’s tilt will be held in Fishers, while the Thunder Ice Arena will play host to Saturday’s rematch.
